DfMA architects

Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) is a way of designing buildings so they are simpler to make in a factory and quicker to put together on site. It combines design for manufacture, which reduces complexity in the parts, with design for assembly, which reduces the time and cost of putting them together.

We design to the RIBA DfMA Overlay. DfMA is at the heart of our modular hotels and housing, and of our own patented MMC system, Strukturea.

The benefits of DfMA

  • Shorter construction programmes
  • Less waste and a lower carbon footprint
  • Safer sites, with fewer hazardous activities on site
  • Fewer workers needed on site
  • Easier quality control before components reach site

DfMA principles we apply

  • Minimise variation: fewer module types, simpler ordering and production.
  • Keep parts simple: avoid unnecessary features that complicate manufacture.
  • Respect tolerances: design within what the factory can achieve.
  • Make assembly obvious: components that can only go together one way.
  • Design out adjustments: fewer fixes needed on site.
