Location: Pennsylvania Castle Estate, Portland, Dorset
Type: Masterplan and luxury coastal lodges
Status: Concept design
Pennsylvania Castle is a historic clifftop estate on the Isle of Portland, overlooking Church Ope Cove and the Jurassic Coast. The owners asked us to explore how a collection of luxury holiday lodges, with an events space, could be added to the grounds without feeling like a holiday park.
Our masterplan steps the lodges along the slope, set back from the cliff edge, so each one has open sea views and privacy. The lodges have butterfly roofs, stone and timber walls and full-height glazing, designed to read as a family of small coastal houses and to stand up to winter storms off the sea. Inside, open-plan living spaces face the water, with warm, natural finishes.
We are also working with specialist manufacturers on building the lodges off site to a year-round residential standard, and on an outdoor kitchen and events space for weddings and gatherings.
