Marlin Hotel, Stratford

Location: Angel Lane, Stratford, London

Our role: MMC adviser and designer

Brief

We were MMC advisers and designers for the design and delivery strategy of the Marlin Hotel planning submission in Stratford.

The site

The site was challenging. Underground transport tunnels restrict the height of the building over much of the site, and the corner of Angel Lane and Windmill Lane is home to the Railway Tavern, a building from the late 1800s.

Response

Rather than lose this piece of architectural history, we wrapped the new hotel around it and completed the streetscape along both site frontages. The new building respects the Victorian scale of the Railway Tavern, rising from three storeys to six further along Angel Lane.

The top level is fully glazed and set back to reduce its impact. Towards the back of the site, where the footprint extends beyond the tunnels, further levels take the building to 14 storeys to maximise the number of guest rooms.

The façade combines a heritage brick often used locally with a modern curtain walling system of flush glass and aluminium fins, giving both interest and privacy.
