Type: Refurbishment and conversion to community services hub

Brief

The building, a former care home for older people, sits beside the Westway in North Kensington. The brief was to convert it into a hub for local adult and children’s services, with secure, welcoming spaces for staff and visitors.

Response

We kept the character of the existing building and added contemporary finishes. Large windows bring daylight into the workspaces and meeting rooms.

The façade takes its cue from the Westway overhead, with strong lines and flowing forms that suggest the movement of traffic.

Inside, the layout separates adult and children’s services and balances security with privacy. Generous glazing and landscaping keep the building open and approachable.

Outcome

The hub brings local support services together in one accessible building and gives a disused building a new role in the community.
