Brief

Polcom Developments asked us to design a hotel for Heriot-Watt University’s campus, linked to its sports Centre of Excellence. It needed to serve visiting athletes, academics and conference guests, as well as everyday travellers.

The concept developed into a mid-market Marriott hotel, now taken forward under a franchise agreement.

Response

The hotel reflects the university’s history and its sports focus. It includes kitchen facilities, training and recovery rooms, meeting and function rooms, and a mix of lounges and dining spaces.

The exterior uses muted colours that match the university’s materials, with warm autumn tones as accents. Inside, clean interiors feature references to learning and sport.

Modular approach

The hotel uses the Polcom modular system as a turnkey solution. Façades are assembled in the factory and installed without scaffolding. Staircases, lifts and mechanical services are also modular.

We took the design through Building Control and the other regulatory approvals.
