Brief

Millions of homes in Ukraine have been damaged or destroyed. Rapid Rebuild Ukraine is an international initiative to build modular construction capacity in the country, from regional module factories to pilot projects, so that safe, energy-efficient homes can be built quickly and at scale.

Studio Anyo is one of the initiative’s founding partners, alongside academic, engineering and industry partners in the UK and Ukraine.

Response

We developed a pattern book of modular housing: a family of studio, one, two and three-bedroom units that combine into low, mid and higher-rise buildings in I, L, T, cross and courtyard shapes. A limited set of repeatable steel modules gives factories a stable product to make, while the layouts, façades and mix can change to suit each site and community.

We have since tested the system on a prototype site, with draft drawings, detailed sections and coordination with structural engineers, and produced the initiative’s brochure, presentations, visual identity and website material.

Our role

Studio Anyo is a founding partner and the architect for the pattern book, covering:

  • Modular housing typologies and unit design
  • Design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) with the structural team
  • Prototype site layout and drawings
  • Brochure, presentations and brand
